History

Our history in construction dates back to the late 1800s when Jay Cashman's relatives constructed the iconic Provincetown Monument at the tip of Cape Cod. From an early age, Jay shared the same enthusiasm, passion, and know-how for the business by turning derelict city parcels in Boston into neighborhood "Victory Gardens." The company quickly evolved and began performing marine construction in the 1970s after the Blizzard of '78 destroyed seawalls and jetties in Boston and throughout New England. Soon after, Cashman was performing multi-million dollar projects such as construction of a new marine facility for the Martha's Vineyard Steamship Authority.

In the early 1990s, Cashman assisted in the cleanup of Boston Harbor and performed the challenging task of installing effluent outfall diffusers on the ocean floor, nine miles from the shore. Cashman's successes in the 1990s allowed the firm to tackle even more complex work such as contracts on the Boston Central Artery / Tunnel (CA/T) project and the Spectacle Island construction in the early 2000s, where some of the CA/T project's excavated dirt and clay was used to resurface and transform the island.

In the past decade, Cashman has continued to complete challenging heavy civil and marine construction projects while growing into a leader in the dredging and remediation industries. Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting provides an array of integrated solutions ranging from navigational, maintenance and environmental dredging, to pond and industrial dredging.

Cashman Dredging's navigational and maintenance dredging supports: port expansion or deepening projects to allow access by larger, deeper draft ships; excavation of turning basins; or providing landfill for expansion of port facilities. The firm's work around the country also addresses challenges found in remediating contaminated sediments deposited in various waterways. Our precision dredging, cap installation, material separation, dewatering, and solidification/stabilization techniques minimize waste generation and reduce long-term liability, while maintaining water quality.

Our experience includes one of the largest environmental remediation projects in U.S. history, a multi-year program that removed / remediated impacted sediment on a 40-mile stretch of the Hudson River in upstate New York. In addition to this large-scale dredging work, Cashman has performed smaller-scale environmental remediation, dewatering, and upland processing throughout the East Coast.

Our vision for the future of energy and renewable power sources also led us to start Patriot Renewables — a wind farm development company with multiple operating projects throughout the Northeast. We also support affiliate firm Preload Cryogenics, a leading prestressed concrete tank design and construction firm for storage of LNG and other cryogenic liquids (LOX, LPG, etc.), and Preload Middle East, which has constructed tanks in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait.

Today, the company is regarded as one of the preeminent contractors in the Heavy Civil and Marine Construction and Dredging / Remediation disciplines. With over 40 years of experience, hundreds of experts, and a comprehensive portfolio of services, Cashman looks forward to helping Clients create the next generation of modern infrastructure.
