Construction of the Chardon Street to Charles River link of I-93 requires building three highway tunnels (two four lanes wide) directly below the existing elevated structure.

Boston, MA
• Supporting the existing structure
with major underpinning at 19 existing highway bents.
• Installation of 420,000 square feet of slurry
wall (the largest such slurry wall on the East Coast).
• Construction of 2,000 linear feet of multi-barrel
tunnel while maintaining existing daily traffic of 180,000
vehicles overhead.
• Relocation of 3 miles of Gas, Sewer and Water
mains.
• The site is at a major convergence point for
heavy commuter traffic from north of the city.
• Adjacent is the new multi-million dollar Fleet
Center which draws 18,000 fans to events 300 days a
year.
• More than 250,000 pedestrians pass around or through the area daily.
