"This
was a complicated little piece of work: we had to excavate
contaminated sediments from the bottom of a tidal, free flowing
channel to precise dimensions and then cover the entire cross
section with pre-cast concrete erosion control mats and riprap.
Most of the time we couldn't see what we were doing: we couldn't
have done it without skilled surveyors and divers"

Project
Highlights
Fort Point Channel Marine Work
Boston, Massachusetts
• This project required excavation and over-land
transportation of 9,300 CY of very wet, contaminated sediments
from the upper reaches of Boston’s Fort Point Channel.
All of this was accomplished without a single spill or
violation of extremely stringent odor control requirements.
• Cashman divers and surveyors installed and grouted
6,800 SY of pre-cast concrete erosion control mats, under
water, with little or no visibility to achieve an exact
final channel cross section. Final hydrographic examination
showed that Cashman’s team had “hit the mark”
and the client was extremely pleased with the final product.
• Cashman equipment managers modified existing marine
excavation equipment to meet the project requirements
for “environmental dredging” that mitigated
the amount of turbidity and sediment agitated by dredging
operations.
• Existing marine and land equipment had to be specially
modified to perform a water operation that, due to low
bridges, could not be accessed from open water!
• Cashman divers worked under extremely cold water
and air temperatures and challenging currents without
incident and at maximum efficiency.
