“We
did all, here: difficult, contaminated soils; a tight sight;
complicated geometry; bad weather; and a demanding Owner and
General Contractor. Were exceptionally proud of this one.”

Highlights
Manulife Financial Corporation, U.S. Operations
Headquarters
Boston, Massachusetts •
41,000 SF (28,000 exposed SF) of slurry wall installed
from late December 2000 until early February 2001. The
Cashman/Nicholson J.V. met the goal of a panel a day,
6 days per week under extreme winter conditions.
• The Cashman/Nicholson Team performed
combined excavation and bracing operations under very
restricted operating conditions. Excavation was performed
in 3 stages to allow the installation of two levels
of intermediate temporary bracing and the final substructure
waterproofing and protection systems. The final depth
of excavation was, approximately, 45 feet below grade.
The team choreographed the bracing and excavation operations
to complete the overall operation in record time.
• The two levels of bracing required
over 1,200 tons of heavy 30 and 36 inch rolled sections
and required over 17,000 man-hours to install and remove.
Removal operations were coordinated with the General
Contractor, a joint venture of Clark Builders and Suffolk
Construction, and were performed as the permanent structural
support system was constructed.
