Highlights
Millbury Interchange
Millbury, Massachusetts
Cashman
was retained as the prime contractor to construct a
new interchange, linking the Massachusetts Turnpike
to the city of Worcester, MA via Routes 20 and 146.
Cashman’s scope of work involved large-scale earthworks
and road building, extensive pile-driving, and the construction
of drilled caissons, four highway bridges, and approximately
four miles of two-, three-, and four-lane roadway and
exit/entrance ramps.
JCI was also responsible for constructing
the associated retaining walls and completing the survey,
protection, and relocation of utilities. Cashman also
installed a new 270-vehicle park-and-ride facility for
commuter buses and cars, and restored the wetlands that
had been removed or excavated.
This project began with the demolition
of three existing highway bridges. This task required
extensive coordination with the Turnpike Authority and
a complex construction phasing plan to maintain and
protect the flow of commuter traffic though the site
area while the new highway bridges, roadways, and ramps
were being constructed.
Specifically, Cashman developed traffic
plans, set up clearly marked barriers, and re-directed
traffic lanes away from the site work. Cashman was also
responsible for successfully relocating Church Street
using stanchions and ramps. As with other tasks, Cashman
completed this relocation effort by coordinating traffic
maintenance and protection with a complete staging plan.
The site also contained contaminated
soils, both TPH and metals. An innovative solution was
to leave these soils on site and incorporate them within
impermeable cells within the permanent road embankment.
