Boulders used as artificial reef

Project Highlights

Shore Protection Project

Fort Pierce, Florida

• The project was located offshore of Hutchison Island about a mile south of Fort Pierce Inlet

• Required vibration, sea turtle, and bird monitoring in this sensitive environment

• An Artificial Reef was constructed within an area totaling approximately 5.0 acres about 1,400 feet offshore in approximately 8-10 feet of water

Reef was built of a single layer of quarried limestone boulders between 3.5 and 5 feet in diameter using approximately 22,000 tons

Boulders were placed in a manner that mimicked existing nearby reef formations

• Preformed 800 Linear feet of Sand Tightening on the landwards side with 2-4 ton stone

Also preformed 1,500 linear feet of sand tightening on the inlet side, placing 4-8 and 8-12 ton stone from a barge

15,000 tons of granite stone were shipped by rail from Georgia quarries, unloaded on to trucks, and transported to the pier to load onto barges that were towed to the job site for placement
