"Before work could begin, it was necessary to find a capable stone setter, to begin amassing an adequate supply of stone that met contract specifications, and locating equipment that would make the construction of this giant mosaic possible."

--Mike Bissonnette, Project Manager

This project was designed to protect the Deer Island Sewage Treatment facility from the sea and storm damage along the entire 6,200-foot length of its vulnerable western and southern shores.

Project Highlights

Deer Island Western Shoreline Protection
Deer Island, Massachusetts

• Construction of a 240,000-ton stone revetment, one of the largest materials handling projects ever undertaken along the Northeast coast.

• Interlocking placement of stone ranging in size from 500
pounds to 20 tons (each with 3 points of contact).

• Relocating a 575 lineal foot segment of the North Metropolitan Trunk Sewer (a 108-inch diameter outfall pipe), including bypass pumping of 35 million gallons of waste water daily.

• Construction of 600 feet of new roadway.

• Demolition of 8 fuel tanks ranging from 6,000 to 25,000 gallons each (including "pigging the lines" to clean fuel from all interior and connector pipes prior to dismantling).
