Position Summary

The Balance of Plant Technician supports operations at Patriot Renewables' wind energy sites in western Maine. The role keeps facilities, equipment, grounds, and site access in safe working order and handles routine and unplanned maintenance on turbines and balance of plant equipment. This position covers a wide range of hands-on work, from substation and spill prevention inspections to snow removal, vehicle and equipment operation, and environmental monitoring. It calls for a dependable person who communicates well and can work independently outdoors in all weather.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain office and garage facilities at multiple sites, including cleaning, organizing, and general upkeep.
  • Perform groundskeeping, including mowing, snow removal (plowing, sanding, shoveling), and stormwater management in compliance with DEP standards.
  • Operate and maintain site vehicles and equipment, including trucks, trailers, snowmobiles, ATVs, and snowcats.
  • Transport vehicles and equipment safely between locations as needed.
  • Perform weekly substation inspections and SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure) checks at all sites.
  • Handle routine and unplanned maintenance at assigned wind sites and provide technical support across the company's other wind energy facilities.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues in variable-pitch and variable-speed turbines and balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Conduct bimonthly eagle mortality searches in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Keep site access open for technicians, including plowing roads and repairing locks.
  • Train team members and contractors on the safe operation of site vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with upkeep and maintenance of company-owned camps near site locations.
  • Take on additional projects and tasks as assigned to support site operations.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in maintenance, mechanical, or technical roles preferred.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and basic mechanical skills.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and follow detailed instructions.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions.
  • Preferred: ability to assist with wind turbine maintenance and repairs.
  • Preferred: understanding of electrical systems used in wind energy operations.
  • Preferred: experience with data entry, ordering parts, and research for site operations and maintenance.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Work outdoors with exposure to heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
  • Safely operate and maneuver vehicles and heavy equipment on uneven or slippery terrain.
  • Perform manual snow removal and other physically demanding tasks.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.

Work Environment

  • Field position based out of Carthage, ME, with regular travel between remote wind energy sites in western Maine.
  • Work is performed outdoors, in substations, around operating wind turbines, and on unpaved and mountain access roads.
  • Exposure to extreme weather, snow and ice, and heavy equipment; required PPE must be worn.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time position.
  • Monday through Friday, standard work hours.
  • Occasional evening or weekend shifts are required for snow removal or emergency site needs.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.

    Compensation

    The expected pay range for this position is $23 to $30 per hour. Placement within the range depends on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state law.
