Position Summary
The Superintendent is responsible for managing the daily operations of marine construction, dredging, and heavy civil projects. This position provides on-site leadership to ensure that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract plans, specifications, and schedules. The Superintendent plays a key role in coordinating crews, subcontractors, vendors, and equipment while maintaining clear communication with project management and clients. This role requires strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and the ability to oversee complex field operations in dynamic environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily leadership, guidance, and direct supervision to field crews and subcontractors.
- Assign and oversee daily work tasks to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules.
- Manage production rates, track progress, and adjust operations to meet deadlines.
- Conduct daily safety and quality control inspections, ensuring compliance with all company and regulatory standards.
- Lead jobsite safety meetings, hazard assessments, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Monitor and enforce compliance with OSHA, USACE, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with the Project Manager and Equipment Manager on scheduling, maintenance, and mobilization of vessels, heavy equipment, and materials.
- Identify potential operational issues and implement solutions proactively to minimize delays and risks.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including daily field reports, production data, and crew time records.
- Collaborate with project management on staffing, scheduling, and material needs.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across all field operations.
- Provide mentorship and development opportunities for crew members and junior supervisors.
Minimum Requirements / Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in dredging, marine construction, or heavy civil projects.
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience leading field crews.
- OSHA 30-hour and OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certifications required or ability to obtain within a company-approved timeframe.
- TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) required or obtainable.
- Strong understanding of dredging and marine construction equipment and operations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and basic project management tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.
- Ability to swim and work safely over water.
- Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screening (safety-sensitive position).
Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Climb ladders, stairs, gangways, heavy equipment, and vessels.
- Stand, walk, and work on feet for extended periods, including on floating vessels and uneven terrain.
- Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, and balancing on unstable or wet surfaces.
- Move safely between vessels and between vessels and docks or land.
- Work in confined spaces and at heights as required.
- Required to wear PPE, including a Type III PFD, throughout the shift, which increases physical strain in hot weather conditions.
- Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, wind, and rain.
- Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and rotational schedules as required.
Work Environment
- Active marine construction, dredging, and heavy civil project sites with heavy equipment and vessel operations.
- Exposure to diesel exhaust, oil, fuel, noise, and potential environmental contaminants.
- Work frequently performed on floating platforms, barges, and vessels.
- Travel and overnight stays required depending on project location and schedule.
Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is $85,000-$205,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
